Objective The objective of study is to investigate the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of hypothyroidism, the possible related lifestyle and metabolic risk factors of hypothyroidism in adults of Gansu province, and to provide scientific basis for the prevention of hypothyroidism.Method A cross-sectional,epidemiological study contained 11268 adults was conducted in seven regions of Gansu province.Every participant was asked to complete a questionnaire, anthropometric measurements and venous blood samples.Result(1)The prevalence of hypothyroidism was 9.82%(overt hypothyroidism(OH):1.42%,subclinical hypothyroidism(SCH):8.40%).Female gender(11.72%)had a higher percentage when compared to male gender(7.27%).(2)in addition to female gender(OR:1.448,95%CI:(1.050,1.996),P=0.024),older age(OR: 1.013,95%CI:(1.002,1.024),P=0.016),WHR(OR: 6.500,95%CI :(2.215,19.075),P=0.001),BMI(OR:1.997,95%CI:(1.072,3.423),P=0,.036),and the family history of thyroid disease(OR: 2.349,95%CI:(1.791,3.082),P<0.001)increased the odds, current or previous smoking history(OR:0.289,95%CI:(0.089,0.940),P=0.039),salty taste preference(OR:0.298,95%CI:(0.165,0.541),P<0.001),a frequent seafood intake(OR:0.457,95%CI:(0.294,0.711),P=0.002)were tended to be associated with reduced risk.In logistic regression analysis serum positive TPO-Ab(OR: 2.419,95%CI: 1.160,5.043,P=0.018)、positive Tg-Ab(OR: 1.976,95%CI:1.037,3.768,P=0.039),and triglycerides(OR: 1.241,95%CI: 1.044,1.474,P=0.014)levels were associated with increased risk of hypothyroidism. Conclusion The prevalence of hypothyroidism in Gansu province was high, affecting approximately one tenth of the adults, and majority of which were SCH.Increasing age, female gender, positive TPO-Ab or Tg-Ab,and increased TG were associated with higher risk of hypothyroidism. To develop a healthy way of work and lifestyle, pay attention to control blood lipids are conducive to the prevention of hypothyroidism.
