Objective The aim of the current study was to investigate the body height distribution profile and prevalence of short stature of primary school students aged from 7 to 12years in AnHui province, and to provide basis for local children health development and provide reference for clinical intervention of short stature.MethodTaking random cluster sampling survey method in September to November2014.First,determine the research school, then layering grade, class as the unit to random cluster sampling.Three areas(Suzhou,Hefei,Chizhou)in Anhui province were selected.6082 urban and rural primary school students aged from 7 to 12 years were recruited.Body heights were measured and compared with the students physique and health survey data in 2010,evaluated using the nine cities’growth standard, the prevalence of short stature was calculated.Results1.In addition to 11 years old girls’height was significantly higher than boys during children aged from 7 to 12 years in AnHui province(P<0.05),the rest of the age group of the girls were behind the height of the boys(7 to 9 year P<0.05,10 year P>0.05,12 year P<0.05).In Hefei,12 years old boys and 11-12 years old girls’height was significantly higher than that of Suzhou(P<0.05),9 and 11 years old boys’height was shorter than that of Suzhou(P<0.05).In the rest of the age group, there were no significant differences in Hefei and Suzhou in the same sex group(P>0.05).Children’s height of Hefei and Suzhou were higher than that of Chizhou(P<0.05).2.In 2010 and 2014,average height in 7-12 years old primary school students in Anhui province presented a gradually increase with age. With 2010 students physique and health survey data in Anhui province, the average height of primary school students in2014 were higher than 2010 levels with every age.The largest increase was 9 years old group(5.02 cm),the smallest increase is 7 years old group(1.84 cm).3.The total prevalence of short stature in 7-12 years old children in Anhui province was2.83%.The prevalence of short stature in boys and girls in urban areas respectively were2.32%and 2.13%(χ~2=0.122,P=0.727);those in rural area were 3.15%and3.72%(χ~2=0.358,P=0.550).At the same age and sex group, children’s height of Chizhou was significantly behind the other two cities. The rate was significantly higher in rural area than that in urban area.Conclusions1.In addition to 11 years old girls’height was significantly higher than boys during children aged from 7 to 12 years in AnHui province.Children’s height of Hefei and Suzhou were higher than that of Chizhou. In 2014 the average height of primary school students were higher than 2010 levels with every age.2.In 6082 primary school students, the short stature was 172,total prevalence was2.83%.The prevalence of short stature in boys and girls in urban areas respectively were2.32%and 2.13%;those in rural area were 3.15%and 3.72%.The total prevalence in urban areas was 2.23%,those in rural areas were 3.43%.Prevalence was obvious differences between urban and rural areas, short stature prevalence in rural areas is significantly higher than urban areas.3.The three areas of Anhui Province, especially in rural area the prevalence of short stature is still higher. The study could provide basis for local children health development and provide reference for clinical intervention of short stature.
