Objective To investigate the current status and prevalence of overweight and obesity school-age children and adolescents over the past 20 years(1995-2014)in Qingdao,then put forward theoretical guidance for the government departments of Qingdao to formulate effective intervention and control measures for them.Methods Data for this study were obtained from four cross-sectional surveys(1995,2000,2010 and 2014)of school children and adolescents aged from seven to eighteen years old in Qingdao.The sample sizes were 2741,3573,5277,4917,respectively.It was adopted that body mass index(BMI)percentile criteria of Working Group on Obesity in China(WGOC)for screening overweight and obesity in Chinese children and adolescents,analysis of the survey data of students' physical and health of 1995-2014 in 7-18 boys and girls in the prevalence of overweight and obesity and the average growth rate.Results 1)The prevalence rates of overweight in 2014 were 16.5%and 11.3%,respectively,for urban boys and girls,and the prevalence rates of obesity were 14.2%and 6.3%,respectively.While the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity for rural boys and girls were 18.4%and 12.2%,14.7%and 7.2%,respectively.The prevalence rate of overweight plus obesity among urban and rural male and female students were 30.7%and 17.6%,33.1%and 19.4%,respectively.The prevalence rates of overweight and obesity were higher in the rural than in the urban areas and higher in boys than in girls.2)A rapid increase of overweight and obesity prevalence in rural boys and girls has been noticed from 1995 to 2014.From 1995 to 2014,the prevalence rate of overweight and obesity in rural male students increased from 5.8%to 18.4%,and the prevalence rate of obesity increased from 3.4%to 14.7%.And the rural girls prevalence rate of overweight increased from 5.8%to 12.2%,while the prevalence rate of obesity increased from 3.4%to 7.2%.3)The prevalence of overweight and obesity among urban boys and girls were on rise from 1995 to 2010.The prevalence of urban male overweight and obesity increased by 4.4%(from 14.0%to 18.4%)and 8.7%(from 9.1%to 17.8%)respectively,and the prevalence of urban female overweight and obesity increased by 3.5%(from 9.3%to 12.8%)and 3.4%(from 5.3%to 8.7%)respectively.The increase in overweight and obesity among boys was greater than that of girls.However,the prevalence rate of overweight and obesity among urban boys and girls showed a downward trend.The male prevalence of overweight and obesity were down by 1.9%and 3.6%respectively,and the female prevalence of overweight and obesity were down by 1.5%and 2.4%respectively.Conclusion The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents in Qingdao increased rapidly between 1995 and 2014.The boys prevalence of overweight and obesity were higher than those girls,and the prevalence of overweight and obesity in rural areas were higher than those in urban areas.It has reached the high level of the largest cities in China.Therefore,the prevention and control of overweight and obesity by an integrated approach among students should be listed as the priority of school health work in Qingdao.
