The 19th century is a "Golden Age" in Russian literature history,with voluminous classics of literature.Gorky had once proudly said:"There is no literature in the West strongly and swiftly manifested in this dazzling and splendid talent."Gorky is such a brilliant beacon guiding the direction of Russian literature.He experienced trials and tribulations and overcame all the difficulties with the pursuit of ideal life,finally scaling the heights of Russian literature.Gorky is a world-renowned Russian writer,essayist,and playwright.Sine he embarked on his writing career,he had dedicated himself to the pen by creating diverse works.Gorky is considered to be the mentor of human soul.Encouraging people to forge ahead,enlightening their thoughts and pursuing the natural beauty of human is his creative essence of early works."Gorky is the mirror of Russia." To study his works,it is of far-reaching significance from literary language perspective and the perspective of elaborating Russia and Russians.Gorky’s status in the literary world is self-evident.There are plenty of researches on Gorky and his works in domestic and foreign academic circles.In this paper,a new path is introduced.By having an in-depth analysis of Gorky’s early short essays with the theory of rhetoric,how to use the narrative style,language and rhetoric means to realize the initiative of enlightening people can be analyzed.This paper aims to:1.reveal the narrative features of Gorky’s early works;2.analyze the language features of Gorky’s early works from lexical and syntactic perspectives respectively;3.elaborate on the rhetoric used in Gorky’s early works;4.demonstrate Gorky’s creative arts on the basis of comprehensive analysis in his early works.This paper consists of the introduction,three chapters,conclusion and references.The preface of the paper indicated the realistic significances,innovations,main purposes,research subjects and specific methods of the study.The first chapter analyzed the narrative features of Gorky’s early novels from narrative vision and time on the basis of narrative theory.His early works were deeply influenced by the traditional Russian literature.In order to guide his people to goodness,the unique Russian folklore style-"telling style" was adopted to show the readers a panoramic picture of the work by switching between internal and external views.The second chapter analyzed the language features of early Gorky’s early novels.Gorky,the wordsmith,fully use various linguistic means to achieve the purpose of his creation.In this paper,the purposes of enlightenment of all citizens were achieved from the lexical and syntactic level by combining with the creative motivation of Gorky.The extensive use of spoken words and phrases in the works fit the people in maximum,increasing the real sentiments.By mimicking the language of the people,Gorky mold a series of figures leading people to pursue freedom which made people feel the power brought by the beauty of words.The third chapter depicted the use of rhetoric in Gorky’s early works.His early works had the typical characteristics of romanticism.The extensive use of lexical and syntactic rhetoric,such as personification,metaphor,simile,repeat,contradiction etc.were in his early works to increase aesthetic experience,highlight the theme,strengthen characters and so on.The conclusion is an overall summary of the whole passage.Gorky was honored as the soldier of Literature and Revolution.His hatred of ugly reality and desire for a better life was the source of his misery.In his deep love for the motherland and the people,he made his debut by creating a large number of enlightening and encouraging literary polemic with great enthusiasm to run counter to the anti-pessimistic and mysterious style of that time.Gorky achieved his creative goals of educating people and leading them to goodness by full use of various creative means.
