A Translation Project Report On Digital Humanities (Chapter 3)

This is a translation project report on the translation of Chapter 3 of Digital Humanities, written in a collaborative authorship, discussing the definition of digital humanities and its impact on society. The authors engaged in the compilation of this book include Jeffrey Schnapp, the former director of Stanford Humanities Lab, and Todd Presner, Professor of Comparative Literature at UCLA, and other three authors. The original text of the project mainly discusses the history of digital humanities as well as the changes it has brought about to people’s life, which provides reference materials for academic research. This report can be divided into four parts: Part One introduces the translation project, including project background and significance. Part Two is the introduction to the source text, including the author introduction, main contents of the source text, and its linguistic features. Part Three illustrates the translation process. According to Newmark’s text typology, the source text belongs to the Informative Text. The translation of this kind of texts should lay emphasis on accuracy and readability. Therefore, the “communicative translation” strategy is adopted in the translation to ensure loyalty to the source text and communicative function of the target text. Part Four summarizes lessons and experience involved in handling this project, as well as problems still to be solved.
