Art Research On Hunan Tongdao Dong Brocade

“Dong Brocade” is one of the traditional ethnic brocades,which has profound cultures.The patterns of brocade firstly originated from the natural objects.Refined through the minds of Dong women,the pattern symbols which have the characteristics of Dong Minority were wove,which are full of the hope for good lives of Dong people.Combined with the field working of Dong brocade region,the interview of the inheritor Su Tianmei and present literature searching,the development progress of brocade art of Dong minority is traced back.Record the types of works and the process flow of weaving in derail with the demonstration of Su Tianmei.The original patterns,development history and the connotative cultures of the patterns of Dong brocade are summarized.From the perspective of artist semiotics,the patterns in the works of Su Tianmei are classified into seven types and they are animals,plants,man-god,artifacts,script,scenery and geometric.And the metaphor of the patterns is the deposition of Dong culture.The cultural development history of Dong brocade mainly originated from the basic shapes of natural objects,the imaginary form of religious legends and the fantastic form of totem worship.The research on the artistic characteristic of the patterns of Dong brocade is mainly from five aspects that are content,color,framing,model and technology.The choose of the patterns’ contents of Tongdao Dong brocade which is represented by Su Tianmei is full of the folk rhyme of Dong minority and sends the feeling to the patterns.The use of color is harmonious and the use of the cold and warm color is suitable.The form of framing is symmetrical structure and has a distinction.The feeling of the model makes us feel that the image reflects meaning while the meaning produce image.The effect of technology interweaves and the meter is beautiful.From the formal language and the symbolization of the patterns of Dong brocade,we can know that the art symbol derives from the simple portrayal of natural objects.It transformed into the material carrier of pursuing good fortune and avoiding disaster after the creation and machining for Dong people.The connotative folk custom makes the patterns of Dong brocade be the classical symbol which symbolize Dong minority.Finally,combined with the connotative culture and patterns’ characteristics of Dong brocade arts,the inspiration to modern design of the pattern symbols of Dong brocade and the application prospect in modern design under the situations of ethnic groups and diversified demands on aesthetic are explored.
