Contexts are divided to three categories in this study, namely, non-context, sentence context, and passage context. This study intends to compare the English words'JOLs and memorizing results produced by these three different contexts, to see which context is most beneficial for English words'memorizing and which will yield highest accuracy of JOLs.There are two experiments. Subjects are students of Business English Major from Higher Vocational College. Experiment 1 is within-subject designed. Contexts are independent variables, including non-context and sentence context. They are within-subject variables. Dependent variables are results of JOLs and tests. Experiment2 is between-subject designed. Independent variables are contexts, including sentence context and passage context, which are between-subject variables; dependent variables are results of JOLs and tests. Both experiments follow three steps:studies, JOLs and tests. The statistics output are analyzed by Excel and Spss17.0.Experiments show that JOLs and test results yielded by sentence context are higher than the corresponding values of non-context respectively.The accuracy of JOLs is high in non-context situation. Accuracy of sentence context is low. In Experiment2, JOLs and test results yielded by sentence context are non-significantly different from those of passage context. JOLs of both sentence context and passage context are inaccurate.The results of the two experiments support the traditional theory of "learning English words in contexts". They prove that contexts, no matter sentence context or passage context, are advantageous to memorize English words. Meanwhile the results indicate that learning words in context is prone to foreseeing bias. When English teachers advocate the way "learning English worlds in context" among students, they should try to improve students'meta-cognitive awareness and ability and instruct students to monitor their learning behavior and habit actively.
