School is an important place for students to learn knowledge and to develop peer relationship.The elementary school maladjustment phenomenon is very common at present,and some primary school students are weary of studying seriously,even primary school students drop out of school because of school adjustment disorder.The previous study found that about 7%-12% of primary school children have serious school maladjustment,up to 20%-42% of primary school children have the problem of school maladjustment.Since Birch and Ladd,two western scholars,put firstly forward the term of ‘school adjustment’,school adjustment problems raised increasingly lot of concern of the researchers.Parents in Chinese culture usually have high expectation on their children and they convey this expectation in their interaction with children daily,which could influence children’s school adjustment.Furthermore,child with different personality trait adapted school environment differently.So it is supposed that the relationship of parental expectation and school adaptation would varied according to child’s personality.This study was to investigate primary school student’s school adjustment and its relation to personality trait and parental expectation on a sample of 245 primary school students from Jinan school in Shandong by Students Personality Questionnaire,School Adjustment Questionnaire and Parents Expectations Questionnaire.Correlation analysis,variance analysis and regression analysis were used to analyze the data.Main results were as follows,1.Test results show that further simple effect,girls’ school adjustment are significantly better than boys’ in Grade 3.There is no significant difference in Grade4-6.2.There is significantly negative correlation between School adjustment and parental expectation total score,school performance,interpersonal relationship,physical quality,conduct performance expectations.It is no relationship between future achievement expectations and elementary school adjustment.There is significantly negative correlation between school adjustment and openness,extraversion,agreeableness,cautious personality.There is significant positive correlation between the emotional personality and school adjustment.3.The emotional personality plays a very important regulating role between School adjustment and school performance expectations.The personality traits of agreeableness play a very important regulating role between school adjustment and future achievement expectation.For the pupils with low emotional personality traits,children’s school adjustment with high school performance expectation is significantly better than low school performance expectation.For the pupils with high emotional personality traits,there is no significant difference between high expectation and low expectation about children’s school adjustment.For the pupils with high agreeableness personality traits,children’s school adjustment with high future achievement expectation is slightly better than low future achievement expectation.For the pupils with low agreeableness personality traits,children’s school adjustment with high future achievement expectation is significantly worse than low future achievement expectation.
