Language Policy Research In The View Of Language Ecology

Language policy is a major decision of a country,which will affect the national politic,economy,technology,culture,etc.through the national plan on the language education,the language using,the language specification,the language status and so on,as well as the harmony of ethnic groups.Language policy can affect these aspects,and be restricted by these aspects at the same time.How to coordinate the various factors is the focus of the study of language policy.The ecology of language emphasizes on the relationship between language and environment,which is devoted to the survival and development of language.Making the research from language ecological horizon aims to create better surroundings for the survival and development of language,and contribute to the development of the country.Singapore is an island which is lack of natural resources but rich in language resources that exist in the multiethnic and multicultural surroundings.It is very incredible that the Singapore government create many “Singapore miracles” in a short time with the strengths of language resources and human resources through the multilingualism bilingual education policy.The essay discusses about the Singapore's language policy,especially from the view of language ecology,whose purpose is to summarize the basis of language policy.The research methods of the essay mainly are literature research,statistics analysis and etc.Sort out the theory system of language ecology by looking up Chinese and foreign literature data.Make clear the domestic and foreign research about the history and current situation of Singapore's language policy by collecting,sorting and analyzing the Singapore government documents.The statistics analysis method is applied to analyze the implementation and effects of the language policy by analyzing the data about the residents' language using and ability.The essay is divided into six parts.The introduction elaborated the reasons for choosing the topic,the current research about the theory of language ecology and Singapore's language policy,as well as the research significance and research methods.The first chapter is the theoretical background,which elaborated the denotation and connotation of language ecology and language policy.The second chapter stated the development of Singapore's language policy in chronological order.By narrating the language ecology of Singapore before it was founded as the first step,it discussed the changes of Singapore's language policy in different periods,such as the period of the country's founding,the period of the national economy' s developing in a rapid speed,the period of a new era with great globalization.The language policy in different period presented different features,mainly because of the needs in different periods.The third chapter made effort to get the statistics of Singapore residents' family language,language ability,languages-speaking distribution of different ethnic groups,aimed to make clear the current situation of the language ecology in Singapore and analyze the implementation effect of Singapore's language policy.The fourth chapter studied how the theory of language ecology affects the language policy's constitution,tried to complete the theory of language planning,which would guide the Chinese international education for our country.And the conclusion reviewed and summarized what discussed above,got the point of view finally.
