| With the popularity of English and the development of Internet in China, the phenomenon of English intermingling with Chinese has become very popular both in people’s daily communication and cyber language. In linguistics, such phenomenon of change from one code to another in communication is called code-switching.In recent years, linguists have done a lot of research on code-switching and have achieved fruitful results, but the code-switching in network communication calls for more attention. In this paper, the author applies Yu Guodong’s Adaptation Modal of code-switching to study a corpus consisting of 500 micro-blog tweets from Sina Weibo. The main research questions are(1)What are the types of Chinese-English code-switching used in Sina Weibo?(2)What kinds of adaptation does Chinese-English code-switching reflect in Sina Weibo? In this paper, text analysis method was adopted to comb and analyze the text content. After systematic analysis of the text content, the author found that with cyber language becoming more and more popular, the frequency of use Chinese-English code-switching in Weibo has gradually increased year by year, and the main types of Chinese-English code-switching in Weibo included sentential code-switching,words code-switching,phrasal code-switching and morpheme code-switching.The author also found that the motivations of switching code between Chinese and English in Weibo included adaptation to the linguistic reality, adaptation to the social conventions and adaptation to the psychological motivations. This study not only validates the feasibility of Yu Guodong’s Adaptation Model in the study of Chinese-English code-switching in Weibo, but also helps to gain a better understanding of this phenomenon. The study also illustrates that Chinese-English code-switching,as a communicative strategy, can help people achieve their communicative purposes better. |
