Death's End,the English version of Chinese science fiction Si Shen Yong Sheng has been widely recognized in foreign countries.Differences exist between the Chinese version and the English version when it comes to the content about gender. The thesis discusses the differences.Luise von Flotow summarizes that in the second paradigm of gender and translation, the selection of texts should not be restricted to women translators and women authors and can be broadened to include works which reflect gender consciousness. The aim of the studies is to point out gender consciousness reflected by the translation,so we can borrow the analytical framework of critical discourse analysis(CDA)to analyze the language used to translate the content about gender first, then explain the possible reasons of the translation from the translating process, and at last point out the gender consciousness reflected by such translation.By analyzing the translation of the content about gender in Si Shen Yong Sheng, the author of the thesis finds that the translator Ken Liu makes use of the translation techniques omission and shift to make some variations to efface or mitigate gender discrimination, erase gender description, obscure gender difference and improve female images.Such translation techniques and method reflect the translation strategy “hijacking.Ken Liu replies that the process of translating the content about gender is the cooperation among the editor Liz,the translator Ken Liu and the writer Liu Cixin. The original reason for making the variations is from the editor, who is the representative of the publisher and plays the role of a skilled reader and writer.Hence, the translation of the content about gender in Si Shen Yong Sheng reflects the mainstream gender consciousness in America. The thesis gives us some enlightenment on the translation of the content about gender and argues that the second paradigm of gender and translation, though in its infancy, does provide a perspective for us to study the translation of the content about gender.Further studies can focus on finding the gender consciousness in various socio-political and cultural contexts reflected by works.
