Feng Menglong's "San Yan" has provided researchers with a number of phenomena which are worthy to be studied, and has developed many different opinions. This thesis, from the perspective of gender, tries to discuss the contradictory consciousness of gender reflected in "San Yan".The first part of the thesis deals with the analysis of the historical and cultural background from which the contradictory consciousness of gender in "San Yan" arose. On the basis the second part relates to the analysis of women's subjective consciousness manifested in such aspects as love and marriage in women's personal autonomy, women's wisdom in the plight, women's pursuit of the cause, and women's assertion of personal rights, which reveals Feng Menglong's full affirmation and praise to women's progressive subjective consciousness,as well as his confusion and contradiction in the confirmation,in order to display the advance and limitation in his thinking. The third part elaborates women's beauty, virtue, and survival situation tending to materialization, marginalization from the male perspective of desires;which indicates women's "Other" identity in the male perspective in "San Yan".In addition, the thesis debates the phenomena of lechery and issues of chastity in "San Yan" comprehensively, disclosing Feng Menglong's traditional gender discrimination on the problem of lechery. And through much analysis of the text material, the thesis would unfold Feng Menglong's attempt to find a more humane and more rationalized way of getting along between men and women on the problem of lechery and chastity, which is sure to show the progress and confinement of gender consciousness in "San Yan".
