Research On The Relationship Between Social Support, Coping Style And Mental Health Of AIDS Patients

The purpose of this study was to explore how AIDS patients’ social support has an impact on mental health through coping styles,and further analyzed the internal relationship among the three.A total of 248 AIDS patients were randomly selected as research object,these AIDS patients were from AIDS hospital and AIDS Foundation Project.The social support rating scale,coping style scale and mental health self-report scale(SCL-90)were used to investigate the subjects.SPSS 21 was used to study the difference of social support,coping style and mental health of AIDS patients on demographic variables and the correlation among the three.Then AMOS 21 was used to construct the structural equation model of the relationship among the three parties,and further discussed the action path between the three factors.The result of this paper as follows:(1)The social support of AIDS patients was compared with that of the 10 cities in China,and the level of social support was significantly lower than that of the national level,which was below average level.At the same time,the level of social support of AIDS patients had very significant difference in the level of education.AIDS patients from the city were received more social support than rural AIDS patients.AIDS patients who had the figure of CD4 above 350 in the total score of social support were significantly higher than those who had the figure under 350.(2)The coping style of AIDS patients was lower in solving problems and seeking help,and the average score was higher in self-blame and withdrawal.For the fantasy and retreat coping style,the score of AIDS patients whose parents married were significantly lower than parents divorced.AIDS patients from rural areas were more likely to use self-blame,fantasy,and negative coping styles than urban AIDS patients.AIDS patients from the city used more help seeking and rational coping style than rural AIDS patients.(3)Compared with the national norm,the mental health level of AIDS patients was significantly lower than the national level,especially in somatization,depression,anxiety,hostility,paranoia and psychosis.At the same time,there were significant differences in the level of education,location and mode of infection.(4)For AIDS patients,the level of social support was positively correlated with positive coping style,and negatively correlated with negative coping style;the level of social support was positively correlated with mental health;positive coping style was positively correlated with mental health,and negative coping style was negatively correlated with mental health.(5)The social support of AIDS patients had positive prediction to positive coping style and negative prediction to negative coping style;social support played a positive role in mental health;positive coping style had a positive predictive effect on mental health,and negative coping style had a negative predictive effect on mental health.(6)For AIDS patients,the positive coping style and negative coping style played an intermediary role in social support and mental health,social support could directly affect mental health,and indirectly affect mental health through coping style as well.
