Objective: Backed by the literature of ancient Chinese medical books, this paper takes relevant contents from Jaundice Article in Synopsis of Golden Chamber as the entry point, and combs out the relevant laws and academic understanding of jaundice in the five aspects of "disease-syndrome – pattern-prescription-medicine" in history, hoping to find new knowledge and help clinical practice.Methodology: This study combines literature research, ontology construction and data mining analysis. The overall methodology can be summarized in the following steps.First of all,the research bibliographic resources are determined and the ancient Chinese medical books related to jaundice are included into the research scope.Secondly, the contents of the literature were selected to focus on the jaundice discussed in the Jaundice Article of Synopsis of Golden Chamber, tracing and exploring the demonstration on the narrow-sense jaundice in the ancient books before and after the Republic of China.Thirdly, this paper uses the ontology construction method to establish a structurized "knowledge base of jaundice-related ancient literature";in the meantime, the 17 jaundice-related ontological concepts, that is,characteristic elements, are marked in the knowledge base by the method of combining human and machine learning.Fourthly, the original data of the marked results is processed in a standardized way. Finally, taking the relevant contents from Jaundice Article in Synopsis of Golden Chamber as history node, this paper uses the method of data mining to perform frequency statistics and association rules analysis regarding knowledge of “disease”,“syndrome”,“pattern”,“prescription” and“medicine”,and then summarize and analyze the origin and law of "disease-syndrome – pattern-prescription-medicine" of jaundice in Synopsis of Golden Chamber. Results: This study refers to a bibliography of 84 ancient books of traditional Chinese medicine, with a total of 1039 text data.Based on the study result, there are differences as well as similarities in the naming and species division of jaundice in the past history, and the narrow sense of jaundice is characterized by yellow eye. Both external infection and internal injury can be caused, the disease location is mainly related to the spleen, stomach, kidney, liver, and gallbladder, while the symptom factor of disease nature commonly centers on endogenous dampness, heat, stasis, cold, toxicity, and debilitation. The most common overall pathogenesis is dampness,as well as the damp-heat yellows. The key treatment is with clearing damp, along with flexible medications according to the differences between cold and heat, deficiency and overdo,in order to dispel dampness. The classic medical formulas established by the Synopsis of Golden Chamber have important guiding value and are widely used in later generations. Conclusion: Based on ontology,it is effective and feasible to construct knowledge base by combining machine learning with human work. Then, the datamining technology is further used to analyze the acquired knowledge text,so as to extract the knowledge information related to "disease-syndrome – pattern-prescription-medicine" of jaundice. This attempt in methodology can provide reference for the study of ancient Chinese medical books, and the acquired knowledge of jaundice is helpful to the Chinese medical practice.
