Starting with landscapes of “Jing Ling Scenery”,the aim of this dissertation is to discuss changes of forms and connotations about real-scene landscapes of Jin Ling during the second half of the 17 th century with a focus on the different representations and contexts of these landscapes. For the landscapes made by painters who have been through the Ming-Ch’ing transition, previous scholars tend to overemphasize the link between them and the characteristics of Ming loyalists. On the basis of historical contexts, and with the help of visual analysis, this dissertation makes a thorough inquiry about the popularity of real-scene landscapes of Jin Ling during the second half of the 17 th century from angles like content, expression form, purpose, and identities of painters and patrons. This dissertation has three parts: 1.Manifesting the irrelevance between the socalled loyalist complex and landscapes of “Jing Ling Scenery” through several case studies.2.Demonstrating that making real-scene landscapes of Jin Ling had become a fashion at that time and interpreting cultural phenomena about this fashion through the discussion of two landscapes’ contents, inscriptions, and patrons.3.Discussing the development of these landscapes and the compositional similarity between them and prints.
