This report is based on the translation of Part Three: The Application: Practicing Effective Communication with Others, which is excerpted from a psychological book named Words Can Change Your Brain written by Andrew Newberg,M.D.and Mark Robert Waldman. This part, including Chapter10,Chapter11 and Chapter12,tells us how to conduct compassionate communication with loved ones, colleagues, leaders and kids. The report comprises two sections. The first section consists of four parts. The first part is task description, which includes background of the source text, reasons for translating the source text and source text analysis. In source text analysis, the translator expounds the language features at lexical level, syntactic level and cultural level. The second part is translation process, including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.The third part is case analysis, which is the key part of the report. In this part, the translator analyzes translation examples using translation techniques, such as negation, division, combination, conversion, annotation, literal translation and generalization under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation. The final part is the summary of the report, including gains and limitations. The second section includes the psychological terms, the source text and the translated text. All the texts can be divided into three types: expressive text, informative text and vocative text, according to their purpose and target readers. The translator classifies the source text into two types: expressive text and informative text, and then employs semantic translation and communicative translation to translate the text accordingly. In the process of translating, the translator understands the book better and masters some useful and practical communication skills such as “trust your partner”,“reframe your negativity”,“make positive statements” and so on.Besides, the translator has a better understanding of semantic translation and communicative translation, which can improve her translation competence. However, the translator still has some translation problems unsolved, such as the translation of the adjectives and the translation of the rhetoric.
