Dongguan begins to reform the oral English test from 2016.It will combine listening and speaking together.There is no listening test in the paper test.Therefore,this study aims to find out the results of the application of Gass' Input-Interaction-Output(IIO model)to English listening and speaking classes.There are three research questions in the thesis.Firstly,what's the effect of IIO model on learners' interest and motivation to listen to and speak English? Secondly,what's the effect of IIO model on IIO model learners' and teachers' interaction? Thirdly,what's the effect of IIO model on learners' ability to listen to and speak English?In order to answer the questions mentioned above,this thesis chooses two classes in Grade 7 from a middle school in Dongguan as the experimental subjects.The experiment arranges randomly Class 9(48 students)as the experimental group and Class 10(49 students)as the control group.The experiment lasted for 14 weeks.In order to ensure the similarity of two classes,the pre-test was carried out.At the same time,pre-questionnaire was sent to the classes to know their interest,motivation,interaction between students and teachers in classes and goals toward English listening and speaking.During the experiment,the experimental group received the IIO model training in English listening and speaking classes while the control group still remained the traditional model.After the experiment,a similar questionnaire was conducted to find the changes.Also,there is a post-test to verify the effectiveness of IIO model and the traditional model.The author uses questionnaires,pre-test,post-test and interviews to collect data.The author uses SPSS 20.0 to analyze the questionnaires,pre-and post-tests,records and transcribes the interviews.From the results of questionnaires and interviews,it finds that the students in the experimental group have increased their interests and motivation to English listening and speaking.At the same time,by analyzing the marks of the post test,students in the experimental group have improved much more in listening and speaking than those in the control group.However,students in control group have more interaction with teachers while students in experimental group have more chances to communicate with their classmates.
