The source text is an excerpt from the Rice: Origin,Antiquity and History,a popular science text written by S.D.Sharma.The source text is substantial in content and the language is easy to understand;the origin, species, domestication and diaspora of rice are introduced in detail. The translation task is initiated by a publishing house which requests that the Chinese version should be able to convey the information of the source text accurately, make the target language readers understand and accept the text content in reading the target text just as they are reading the original one.In order to meet the demands of the initiator and achieve the communicative purpose, instrumental translation strategy is adopted in translation.Based on the “text analysis theory” proposed by Christiane Nord, one of the representatives of German functionalist school of translation, the intratextual and extratextual factors have been analyzed in detail in the process of translation, which aims to introduce some knowledge about rice to the target language readers and then achieve functional equivalence between the source text and the target text. The source text content involves some extratextual factors such as historical, geographical and ideological factors;the phenomena of intratextual factors such as people names, institution names, rice names and long and complicated sentences are obvious. In order to achieve the purpose of translation effectively, these factors are analyzed in this report and appropriate translation methods such as: paraphrase, amplification, free translation, transliteration plus annotation, adding pictures and brief introduction, dividing long and complicated sentences, adjusting word orders etc.are adopted in the process of translation. These methods not only are beneficial for target language readers to understand the information of the source text, but also broaden their horizons. This will have certain reference value for the translation of popular science texts in the future.
