In January 2019,the UK’s Home Office released the newest version of Tier 4 of the Points-Based System Policy Guidance, introducing student visa system in every aspect ranging from the length of courses to the qualification of private foster families. As Britain schools are always top destinations for Chinese students who are planning to study abroad, translating the guidance into Chinese would be in great help for them to understand the student visa policy better so that they could make proper preparations accordingly. This report is based on the translation of the guidanceIn chapter one,the author introduces the translation task, points out its significance, and elaborates how this task proceeded. The second chapter is a compendium of Nord’s translation-oriented text analysis theory, focusing on four conceptions of documentary translation, instrumental translation, extratextual factors and intratextual factors.Based on the theoretical framework, chapter three comprehensively analyzes extratextual and intratextual factors involved in the translation process. When studying extratextual factors, including sender, sender’s intention, audience, medium, time of communication, place of communication, motive for communication and text functions, the translator resorts to both the source and the target texts. And when it comes to the research of intratextual factors as subject, content, text composition,presuppositions,non-verbal elements, suprasegmental features, lexis, and sentence structure, analysis primarily centers on the source text.Chapter four is case study at pragmatic and linguistic translation levels, which is designed to illustrate how the analysis of extratextual and intratextual factors works in producing high-quality translations. In dealing with translation problems at pragmatic level, translations of modal verbs, proper nouns and personal pronouns are given as examples to manifest the significance of factors as the sender, the audience, the presuppositions, and the text functions. As for approaches to linguistic problems—translating long sentences and passive sentences,it shows that it is sentence structure analysis that plays a key role.Chapter five is the conclusion of this report,in which major findings and some deficiencies during the translation process are described. As for major findings, firstly, there should be a different hierarchy in the analysis of either intratextual or extratextual factors due to different text types.Secondly, the analysis of presuppositions mainly focuses on proper nouns, text function dwells on the translation of model verbs and sender and audience provide a guidance for translating personal pronouns.Thirdly,if the type of the target text has been decided, then the analysis at linguistic level should primarily center on understanding the meaning of the source language and the features of the target language. But owing to the lack of references of similar styles, the analysis might not be as thorough and precise as the translator desired. And culture-related and text specific problems were not elaborated, both of which need further study.
