A Report On The Translation Of Truly Madly Guilty

This is a report on the translation of the first five chapters of Truly Madly Guilty,which is one of the best sellers in the New York Times.Truly Madly Guilty takes on the relationship of couples,lovers,parent-children and friends.It describes that how guilt can lead to the conflicts and contradictions,how sometimes what we don’t speak out can be more influential than what we do,and how it is the most unintentional words and deeds that can do the greatest harm to other people sometimes.During the process of translation,the translator finds that “faithfulness” and “smoothness” are indivisible and of the same importance.“Faithfulness” refers to understanding and expressing the original text exactly,and "smoothness" means making the translated text fluent.This article attempts to explore the relationship between faithfulness and smoothness through analyzing their connotation and the comments from some famous translators.It further points out that how to achieve these two translation principles to get better translation version.This report consists of four parts,namely task description,process description,case study and conclusion.After an introduction to the background and significance of the project,the author,main contents and linguistic features of the original text,the report analyzed in detail the difficulties encountered and translating methods used in the process of translation.It suggests that the guidance of the standard of faithfulness and smoothness is of great help for the translation.It also talks about the main problems translators has encountered and the translation strategies when upholding the principles of faithfulness and smoothness in translation process.
