Shitian, one of the nineteen chapters of Er Ya,the earliest known dictionary and the encyclopedia, collects ancient people's understanding towards “Tian”(Heaven)and its influence on people's life.It is only found that the translations of Chinese Lunar Mansions so far are mainly presented with pinyin and their literal meanings, thus ignoring their internally hidden rich connotations. This thesis focuses on the translation of Chinese Lunar Mansions in Shitian under the guidance of Steiner's Fourfold Translation Motion theory, revealing rich semantic connotation of mansions and exploring the translation mode for related Lunar Mansions in other classics. The translation of Chinese Lunar Mansions of Shitian is not only an exploration of the connotation of ancient Chinese mansions, but also an attempt to translate the relevant mansions in Chinese classics.Hermeneutics is the discipline explaining certain scientific concepts and theories and a kind of philosophy interpreting what is not immediately intelligible in the text.Combined with Steiner's fourfold translation motion theory, mansions are fully analyzed from four steps, namely “trust, aggression, incorporation and compensation”.In the process of trust, through the annotations related to the text of Shitian and cultural relics of Lunar Mansions, the translator starts to believe that the translation of Lunar Mansions is both valuable and meaningful. In the aggression stage,Lunar Mansions are often presented with polysemy so the accurate meanings are figured out from the perspective of linguistic and culture. In the incorporation stage, the form and content of the translation of Lunar Mansions are fully exposed. As for the stage of compensation, taking the foreign readers' understandings of the Chinese Lunar Mansions into consideration, the translator supplements necessary background knowledge and the connection between Chinese and western astronomical knowledge to minimize the difficulty of reading and to keep readers interested in the translation.Shitian is an important text to introduce lunar mansions as well as to cover a wide range of cultural connotations.Under the guidance of Steiner's fourfold translation motion, the text successfully presented the translation of Lunar Mansions in Shitian.Through the translation, the meanings of Lunar Mansions are explicitly explained from the perspective of philology and exegesis. The influence of the Lunar Mansions on ancient people's political, agricultural and cultural life is fully reveled.Based on this translation, the preliminary translation mode of Lunar Mansions is outlined and further applied in other texts containing lunar mansions, thus providing reference to other English translation of Chinese classics which are similar to Er Ya.
