| This project is chosen from Salem Is My Dwelling Place:A life of Nathaniel Hawthorne(excerpts).The author selects Chapter Ⅷ and Chapter IX as the translation material.Chapter VIII mainly analyses Hawthorne’s novels and interprets his literary thought combining with his own life experience;Chapter IX mainly talks about Hawthorne’s wife,Sophia Peabody Hawthorne and Sophia’s family.This biographical text owns plain language,a small amount of rare and strange words.The sentence structure is not too complicated and easy to understand.According to the features of the book,the author finally chooses semantic translation and communicative translation proposed by Peter Newmark,an famous English translator,to guide the translation practice.Based on text typology,Newmark proposed the theory of semantic translation and communicative translation.Semantic translation tends to literal translation but it respects context while communicative translation stresses on free translation,reader-centered.During the translation process,the author has faced various problems:inadequate understanding of words;too many proper nouns including names,places and works;a great deal of background knowledge and culture of Hawthorne’s Era;quoting fragments from Hawthorne’s works.The author used translation strategies like addition,deletion,word formation,conversion to solve these problems and make the translation smooth and natural.After the translation,the author felt a lot.There is a long way for the author to be a qualified translator.And now,the author’s translation ability needs to be improved urgently.The bilingual skill is not good enough and the author has a lack knowledge of background information.It is necessary for the author to read more excellent translation works to improve the translation level. |
