EVS(Ear-Voice Span)plays an important role in the simultaneous interpretation process.A great number of interpretation examples show that the quality of simultaneous interpretation is positively related to the quality of EVS.In a lot of different interpretation backgrounds and environments,in order to adapt to the rhythm of the source language,or when encountering unexpected situations or some special situations such as complex sentence patterns, the interpreter needs to adjust the length of EVS according to the actual situation to improve the quality of interpretation.Based on the author’s interpretation practice of Yu Minhong’s speech at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, this report aims to study how interpreters balance their energy to adapt to the requirement of interpretation during the interpreting process, and obtain the EVS change rules suitable for interpreters themselves. And based on the specific case analysis and Professor Daniel Gile’s “the Effort Model”,the report will elaborate how EVS plays a role in interpretation practice, use cognitive and subject knowledge to interpret and understand language, and analyze some cases of simultaneous interpretation of the speech. And the report further explores the use of different EVS in different situations to improve the quality of simultaneous interpretation and ensure the smooth and accurate interpretation. Finally,it summarizes and discusses the reasonable use of the syntactic linearity principle, prediction and EVS in the process of simultaneous interpretation, which aims to have a better balance of the limited energy of interpreters. It helps the interpreter find a suitable method and complete simultaneous interpretation in the future.Studying “the Effort Model” of Professor Daniel Gile helps us to better understand the process of interpretation to find a scientific system of interpretation strategies and better serve the simultaneous interpretation to improve the level of interpretation.
