With the ever-increasing exchanges between China and other countries,China is playing an ever-growing role in shouldering responsibilities and missions on the international stage. The urgency of disseminating China’s voice to the world and shaping China’s image has become increasingly prominent. The Governance of China Ⅱ is an important political document showing China’s national conditions and its leaders’ideas for governing the country. It opens a new window for the international community to perceive and understand China and its domestic and foreign policies. The Governance of China II contains rich classical Chinese. The distinct"Xi-style" language is conducive to building a discourse system with Chinese characteristics.Nevertheless, the differences of language structure and culture between Chinese and English make the translation of classical Chinese beset with difficulties. The English translation of The Governance of China Ⅱ shows the translation strategies of political documents under the new situation.Hence, the study of the translation strategies of the classical Chinese in this book will play a guiding role in the future development of political documents translation.Relevance theory studies translation from a cognitive perspective and regards translation as an ostensive-inferential process of interpreting the source language, which has a strong explanatory power for translation activities. The purpose of international publicity of political documents is to have a dialogue with other countries in the world and help the world understand China, which is consistent with the concept of communication of Relevance Translation Theory.Hence,Relevance Translation Theory can be used to study the English translation of The Governance of China Ⅱ in depth, thus providing strategic and principled guidance for the international publicity translation of political documents. This thesis takes the classical Chinese in The Governance of China Ⅱ as the research object.Relevance Translation Theory is utilized to analyze the research object from the perspectives of figures of speech and cultural connotations.Based on communicative intention and optimal relevance, this thesis evaluates the accuracy of the translation, analyzes the translation process, and offers some suggestions for the translation that do not achieve enough "relevance".The upshot of the thesis is presented as follows:1)translation strategies such as direct translation, conversion, structural integration, paraphrasing and adaption can be adopted to make success in communication;2)in order to rebuild"relevance" in the translated text, the following guiding principles can be used for the translation of classical clauses in political documents:adapting to cognitive environment to achieve cultural relevance;optimal-relevanced translation of information;ostensive-inferential translation of Chinese elements;realizing communicative intention as expressing attitudes.
