The famous translation theorist Peter Newmark proposed the theory of semantic and communicative translation in the 1980s,which provided approaches for translation practice.Through analysis on the application of semantic translation and communicative translation in the C-E translation of A Story of Cha Dui,it’s hoped that English version of A Story of Cha Dui would serve two different purposes as follows. On the one hand, the author of this project report advocates that the English rendering should stay true to the original text in respects of content, form, linguistic style, and culture so as to highlight the Chinese characteristics of source text, which caters to the national strategy of“Chinese Culture Going-out,and contributes to strengthening Chinese literature’s international standing. On the other hand, the author also puts emphasis on the English rendering’s readability and aeeeptability so as to ensure that foreign readers could keep reading it,which requires that the translation should not cause obscurities and difficulties on target readers9 part. The primary difficulty in translating A Story of Cha Dui lies in how to maintain a balance between preserving cultural characteristics of source text and enhancing the target readers’ reading experience by increasing English rendering,s comprehensibility and readability. In this regard, the author suggests the application of transliteration, coupled with necessary annotations,so as to maintain the Chinese cultural elements of source text. The loosely connected sentences and paragraphs of source text also pose a challenge to the translation, and the solution is to pay close attention to context and add conjunctions, pronouns, verbs, subjects, and complementary information to make the context meaningful and logical in target text. The problem with translating the writing style is also a tough one.To solve this problem, the author puts emphasis upon wording, phrasing, sentence pattern of both source text and target text in translating certain sentences and paragraphs, endeavoring to represent the narrative style and linguistic feature of the source text in the target text.In the translation practice, the author puts forward semantic translation methods and communicative translation methods respectively. For the application of semantic translation, the author proposes to preserve the cultural connotations and maintain the linguistic features. For the application of communicative translation, the author proposes translation methods, including adding words, restructuring and rewriting sentences, and making explanations.Besides, the combined use of semantic translation and communicative translation also proves to be a necessary translation approach. In conclusion, the author points out the scope of application for communicative translation and semantic translation respectively and considers communicative translation and semantic translation to be ideal translation approaches in translating Chinese literary works.Meanwhile, the author believes that semantic translation could be used in combination with communicative translation in translation practice, despite their differences. Finally, the author puts forward the limitations of the report and suggestions for future studies.Through the translation practice, the author has obtained a deeper understanding of Shi Tiesheng’s novel and improved his C-E translation skills. It is hoped that useful references can be found in this report for relevant studies in the future.
