A Report On E-C Translation Of Guidelines For Landslide Susceptibility,Hazard And Risk Zoning

Landslide is one of the major hazards of geological disasters.The landslide would not only bring threats to people,but also cause horrible damages to buildings,infrastructures,environment,resources etc.Due to the vast territory and diverse landform of our country,there are many landslide events happening in China every year,bringing great pains and losses to our nation and people.It is of great significance to learn from the foreign countries to prevent and deal with natural disasters in our country.From this perspective,the translation of Guidelines for Landslide Susceptibility,Hazard and Risk Zoning(hereinafter referred to as Guidelines)is of practical significance.This translation report is based on the author’s E-C translation task of Guidelines.The author chooses 31 cases from the source text for analysis and discussion.In the light of Functional Equivalence theory proposed by the American linguist Eugene A.Nida,the author has probed into the translation techniques and the strategies she adopted in the translation task.On the basis of analysis and study,the following findings are generated: 1.At the lexical level,in the translation of pure technical terms,the author adopts “word-to-word” translation technique;in the translation of semitechnical terms,the author determines their meanings by carefully analyzing the contexts and professional background.2.In order to produce the accurate meanings of these technical terms,in addition to the adoption of translation techniques,translators should also consult parallel texts or seek help from experts.3.At the syntactic level,in translating the English passive voice,the author chooses the technique of turning the English passive into the Chinese active or just retaining the passive voice in the receptor language.4.In the translation of long and complex sentences,the author adopts such translation techniques as “addition”,“conversion” or “division”.5.The adoption of the translation techniques should not be mechanical but flexible,and in some cases,translators should adopt one or more techniques at one time.Through the report,the whole process of the translation can be presented.It is sincerely intended to provide reference for the translators who are engaged in translating similar texts and the translators who are interested in the translation of English for science and technology.
