| The Royal Academy of Dance(RAD),founded in 1920,is an international organization aiming to provide professional support and mentoring for Ballet. In July 2018,the RAD appointed an examiner Susan to Nanjing Zanjia Ballet Training School for graded examinations, teaching exchanges and ballet training. The reporter undertook the interpreting project. In the process of this project, the reporter was encountered with two types of obstacles—from the perspective of interpreting and those beyond interpreting. The former is reflected in four aspects:unfamiliarity with the field of ballet, poor performance as taking incomplete notes, the noisy working environment and the requirement for dance gestures to help interpretation; The latter is related to the reporter’s vague understanding of interpreters’ multiple roles, lack of on-site reaction and how to handle emergencies when interpreting.Drawing upon eminent interpreters and previous research as well as his reflections, the reporter proposes comprehensive interpreting strategies. The solutions are divided into two parts accordingly. With regard to interpreting, the interpreter should make full preparation for professional knowledge,in particular, terminology, concerning ballet, strengthen interpreting practices without notes, and adapt to the characteristics of ballet interpreting. With regard to those beyond interpreting, the interpreter should enhance the awareness of accepting multiple roles as an interpreter, practice on-site performance and keep calm as well as seek help from others. The paper will provide assistance for interpreters in dance field;it will also enrich the database in this field which attracts growing attention in recent years. |
