Sociolinguistics is a study of language from the perspective of social environment, which is closely related to society, language and translation. With the acceleration of the modernization and increasing foreign exchanges in China, many new social language problems have arisen. Thus, the introduction to foreign sociolinguistics books has both theoretical and practical significance. Therefore, the author chooses Chapter 10-13 of An Introduction to Sociolinguistics written by Ronald Wardhaugh as the source text in translating, the content covering ethnography and ethnomethodology, solidarity and politeness, acting and conversing, language and gender, etc.Considering Newmark's classification of text types, the author adopts Newmark's communicative translation together with semantic translation as translation strategies in this translation practice.Communicative translation that is reader-centered attaches great importance to the naturalness and effect of the target text in the target language and is suitable for translating informative and vocative texts, while semantic translation that is author-centered emphasizes that the target language should be as close to the source language as possible in form and meaning, which is suitable for translating expressive texts.Since most texts have more than one language function,so the combined application of communicative translation and semantic translation is a better strategy of translation. This paper focuses on the case analysis of the application of communicative translation and semantic translation to the translation practice from the four aspects, namely, lexical, syntactic, textual and cultural level, and summarizes the experience and the lessons on translating, which are learned from the translation practice. It is hoped that some useful references will be provided for other translators in translation.
