The translation text Why Are There So Many “Madwomen” in Hong Kong? is a commentary article taken from the digital version of the official magazine People.The source text mainly describes how some representative famous actresses in Hong Kong entertainment stardom gradually fall from the upper class into the image of“madwoman” portrayed by media,revealing the conservative values about love and marriage and gender that is close to the pre-modern agricultural society in Lingnan.Therefore,the source text contains many media-featured words,stars related hot news headlines,cultural-loaded words and words with Chinese characteristics,and its language features are obvious with many rhetorical devices,long sentences and short paragraphs composed of the news headlines.Based on this translation practice,this paper analyzes the text type and function of the original text with Peter Newmark’s Text Typology.The source text mainly describes the social status of Hong Kong women with some typical examples and adopts many rhetorical devices with hidden meanings of the utterance of the speaker,so it mainly contains expressive and informative text.Based on this,semantic translation and communicative translation are adopted as the guidance of translation practice.Besides,this paper reports the whole process of translation practice in detail and analyzes the proposed specific translation techniques with typical examples.During this translation process,the translation of cultural-loaded words and long and complex sentences are the key points.Based on Newmark’s theory,the translator has chosen several typical examples from the translation materials,and analyzed them one by one from the rhetoric,lexical and syntactic level.Besides,the translator applied some specific translation techniques such as annotation,addition,splitting,combining and order rearrangement to summarize the problems in the translation process to enhance readability and convey the original meaning to the target readers in a more accurate way,hoping to provide a new perspective for the translation of commentary articles.
