Reading is a significant skill that must be taught and trained,which is not only a major input form,but also one of the core skills in English learning and teaching.With the development of primary English courses,English reading teaching is getting attention increasingly.Whereas,affected by the traditional teaching concepts and situation,the primary school higher grade English teaching is facing multiple challenges nowadays.How to strengthen students' reading effect is becoming a major issue in the English teaching.Picture books are designed for children who have limited language proficiency to read,to learn and to have fun.Picture books can provide a platform for children to enjoy the pleasure from reading,enriching imagination and broadening their horizon.This thesis aims to explore the application of English picture book as reading materials in English reading teaching and check its influence on strengthening students' reading effect.To be concrete,the research tries to explore: 1)How to motivate students English reading interest with the applying of English picture books? 2)What suitable strategies are used for picture book reading and teaching? 3)What is the orientation of selecting English picture books as teaching aids?As an application research,this research was conducted in an extended class in a primary school from Hangzhou,Zhejiang Province.The participants are 30 students of grade six.The research lasted for nearly a whole semester.The data collected from the pretest,posttest,questionnaire and thinking-aloud exercise.The collected data indicated that English picture books are for students of primary school because they match the cognitive characteristics of primary school senior students.Meanwhile,their simple and interesting plots and vivid illustrations stimulate students' interest in reading and cultivate their long-term reading habits,thus improving their reading effect.Picture book with teaching strategies and skills improves students' reading effect,such as making full use of picture book cover for guessing and predicting.When choosing English picture books,students,teaching,content quality,auxiliary teaching resources and other factors should be considered Picture books can not only meet students' cognitive needs and teachers' teaching objectives,but also have attractive story content and exquisite illustrations.Finally,this research puts forward suggestions for teachers who try to carry out English picture book reading teaching in daily classes.First of all,when teaching picture books,teachers should try to ensure that every student has an original picture book.If the picture book has been adapted,the teacher should mark the exact page number at the end of the page to facilitate the identification of students' reading and teachers' teaching.Secondly,teachers should make full use of the cover to interpret.When dealing with content of each page,teachers should try to ask questions related to the content of picture books,instead of staying at the level of words and sentences.The form should not come before the content,and attention should be paid to the improvement of students' thinking quality.Finally,teachers should connect the content of picture books with students' real life experience to achieve the purpose of language output.
