In the 2011 edition of the "Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standards",specific requirements for story reading in the primary school are clearly stated.However,to improve students’ reading competence through picture books teaching has become a way to realize the new curriculum standard of reading teaching,and has gradually become a major trend of primary school English reading teaching.Then how to cultivate students’ English reading ability through picture books and develop good reading habits? This paper identifies the following research questions :(1)what are the problems in English picture book reading teaching in primary schools?(2)what are the blocking factors in the teaching of picture books in middle grades?(3)how to improve the effectiveness of English reading teaching of picture books in middle grades? In this regard,this study is to find out the problems in the English picture book reading teaching and propose corresponding countermeasures.After studying related studies both in domestic and foreign literature,the writer researched 96 students from two classes in H Experimental Primary School of Huai’an,Jiangsu.Class A,Grade 4 is the experimental class,Class B,Grade 4 is the control class,The study used Keep Up with the Rabbit Grading Picture Books(Yilin Version)as teaching material.The experiment lasted for one year.The research used many research methods such as classroom observation,questionnaire,interview,data collecting and data analyzing by SPSS.This study proposed three strategies of picture book reading teaching,(1)Balance the scale and grasp the progress.Teachers should grasp the reading progress according to the overlapping features of picture books.(2)Increase or decrease fit degree and control depth.Based on learning,picture books have appropriate additions and subtractions.(3)Fine extensive moderate,grasp the key points.Close to the picture book "eyes",intensive reading and extensive reading should be combined.In addition,it also summarizes the teaching steps of picture book reading.It is mainly divided into two aspects :(1)to target,key breakthrough;(2)to grasp the accurate angle and refine the links.The research results show that,(1)the application of English picture books in the reading teaching helps to arouse the students’ interest in learning English and improve their reading abilities.(2)English teachers can expand curriculum resources by consciously integrating picture books with reading teaching.(3)The data of this study shows that there is a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class after the experiment,which indicates that the oral ability of the experimental class has been significantly improved after the implementation.According to the full mark of reading questions in the final exam,the full mark rate of the experimental class reached 54.17%,higher than the 41.67% of the control class.(4)the current teaching of reading picture books in primary schools is still at a relatively shallow stage,teachers’ understanding of the function and value of picture book teaching is not far enough.The students have heavy learning tasks and different levels of reading abilities,so the effect is greatly reduced.Teachers need to keep researching on the picture book reading teaching.
