As a company specializing in manufacturing and selling electronic computers,IBM published the Chinese version of Dummies series to expand Chinese market and win more Chinese customers. This practice report is a summary of the author's translation practice of Agile for Dummies(one of the books in Dummies series).During the translation process, the author has encountered the following translation problems: 1)lexical level: lack of flexibility in pronoun translation and inconsistency of terminology translation;2)syntactic level: failure to convey information accurately and to keep brevity, and lack of aesthetic effects;and 3)textual level: loss of context meaning and inconsistency of language style.Agile for Dummies,as a popular science text, aims to use plain language to popularize agile development method to readers.According to Newmark's text typology,Agile for Dummies possesses features of both informative texts and vocative texts. On the one hand,it provides information related to Agile development. On the other hand,it attracts customers to adopt the software development method.Newmark argues that semantic and communicative translation can be combined in the translation practice. Therefore, the author makes use of semantic translation to solve translation problems on loss of semantic meanings and employs communicative translation to solve translation problems on failure to convey communicative purpose of language so as to convey information and attract customers. To be specific, the author adopts translation methods such as annotation, paraphrasing, combination, and addition. The author hopes that the practice report can provide a reference for the translation practice of similar texts.
