Before the idea of Buddhist karmic retribution was introduced into China, there was already a similar or simple karmic thought in Chinese native thought.Although the Buddhist thought of retribution for karma and the Chinese traditional thought of retribution for good and evil have some differences, they also have something in common.Since the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the thought of retribution has caused many major controversies.Especially the dispute between Hui Yuan and Huan Xuan and Dai Kui.Huiyuan explained the thought of karma in a complete and systematic way on the basis of combining Buddhist thought of karma with traditional Chinese thoughts of good and evil.Hui Yuan’s thought of being immortal is the fundamental question of whether one can become a Buddha, and it is the theoretical pillar of Hui Yuan’s ideology of renunciation and karma. In Huiyuan’s Buddhist thought,"Spirit" is directly inferred from "Nature of Buddha",and at the same time,"Spirit" is also the subject of reincarnation of karma. Therefore,Hui Yuan’s "Spirit" is closely related to the Nature of Buddha thought and the retribution thought in Buddhist thought. The theory of karma based on the thought of immortality is the focus of Huiyuan’s Buddhist thought.Huiyuan believes that ignorance is the source of karma.Human retribution is not limited to this life, but also the so-called past and afterlife. When receiving retribution, people receive retribution through the "heart"(Spirit). The "heart" is induced by things, because there is a delay in induction,so there is a retribution. But it is not not to report, but the time has not yet come. The response to human sins is "natural rewards and punishments" and "necessary numbers." Huiyuan believes that karma and reincarnation are the greatest pains in life,so he hopes that people can eliminate this pain through the pure land".
