The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011edition)sets forth language requirements for pupils of listening,speaking,reading,writing,acting and audiovisual.It also advises that English teachers in primary schools make the best use of traditional media and modern teaching resources,enrich teaching contents and forms and provide certain context for pupils.Based on the requirements of The English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2011 edition)and the English picture book teaching seminar in Linyi,the author reads many literature and finds that picture book contains both picture and text with high repetition rate of vocabulary and interesting story.However,English picture book teaching has not been widely popularized.This paper aims to explore how to use English picture books in English teaching in the senior grade of primary school,and to verify its role in improving reading interest and reading level.Therefore,the author applies English picture books to explore their influence on the interest and English reading level of students.This paper mainly adopts individual interview,tests and questionnaires.The author chooses 100 students in two classes in the fifth grade of J primary school as the tests subjects.The experiment class mainly uses English books as its teaching material,and assisted with English picture books while the control class only uses English books.The author takes the final grade of two semesters as the pre-test and post-test scores.Before the experiment,the author conducts a questionnaire on teachers’ attitude towards students’ reading situation.Two interviews are conducted.After the experiment,the following conclusions are drawn :English picture books can attract students’ attention,improve their interest in English reading and improve the ability of text comprehension and reading ability of senior students in primary school.Therefore,in primary school English reading teaching,teachers should choose appropriate picture book resources,integrate them effectively with teaching materials,and help students sort out story content and internalize language knowledge.
