| The fourth grade of primary school is an important transition period in elementary school. The form of thinking gradually transfers from image thinking to abstract logical thinking. The students’learning content and the learning pressure have increased. The quality of students’ attention is growing rapidly at this stage, and a good quality of attention can effectively improve their academic performance, learning efficiency and make good preparation for the higher grades. On the contrary,a series of bad behaviors such as skipping in class, small movements, hyperactivity and poor control ability will occur, which will lead to the decline of academic performance. This study improves the concentration, stability, alertness and academic performance of the fourth grade primary school students through attention intervention training.Method:Forty-eight fourth students were randomly selected for this study. And they were allocated to three groups, table tennis training group(n=12),conventional training group(n=12),and control group(n=24).By using the Chinese urban version of<Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices,SPM>revised by Professor Zhang Houcan in 1986 to ensure 48 randomly selected students have normal intelligence. The conventional training group and table tennis training group conducted 26 intervention trainings every forty minutes for nine weeks after class every Wednesday,Thursday, and Friday. The forty minutes of table tennis training did not include the warm-up time.Attention-grabbing test was used to measure the level of students’ attention. The mid-term Chinese, math, and English achievements were collected as indicators of pre-intervention learning, and the final Chinese, math, and English grades were collected as indicators of post-intervention learning.SPSS 17.0 was used to analyze the data.Results:(1)Before the intervention, there were no significant differences in intelligence level, concentration, stability and alertness of the table tennis training group, conventional training group and the control group. And there were no significant differences in Chinese grades, mathematics grades and English grades of the table tennis training group, conventional training group and the control group.(2)Through the intervention, the table tennis training group had significant improvements in the concentration, stability and alertness. The conventional training group had significant differences in concentration, stability and alertness.(3)Through the intervention, significant improvements in Chinese grades and mathematics grades of the table tennis training group. And the Chinese grades and mathematics grades of the conventional training group were significantly improved However, the table tennis group and conventional training group did not improve the English scores significantly.(4)After the intervention, there were no significant differences in the concentration, stability and alertness of the control group. There were also no significant differences in Chinese grades, math grades and English grades. Conclusions:Table tennis intervention training and conventional intervention training can significantly improve the concentration, stability and alertness of fourth grade students in primary school, and both trainings have significantly improved the Chinese and math performance of fourth grade students in primary school. |
