Rhapsody in Blue as a specific piece of 20th century Jazz Age and Machine Age,it has received absolute attention on the premiere date.Not only because George Gershwin harmoniously integrated jazz elements into the grand frame of classical music,but also because he brought jazz into an elegant concert hall for the very first time.Gershwin combined the painting and the musical language in the title by taking his brother's advice,leaving a space for future generations to reverie.In fact,the musical language in the title not only points to "Rhapsody",but also points to "Blue".In English,"blue" can represent a color used in the paintings,but also represent the musical language "blues",a Jazz genre.On the one hand,based on Synaesthesia and Popular Culture:Arthur Dove,George Gershwin,and the 'Rhapsody in Blue ' by Judith Zilczer as the main supporting document for the painting language opinion in this thesis."blue" is extended to lead to the concept of "Synaesthesia".On the other hand,Based on Cambridge Music Handbook Gershwin:Rhapsody in Blue by David Schiff as the main supporting document for the musical language of this thesis,"blues" has been deeply embedding into the musical themes,and subtly blending into the musical form as a creative technique.This thesis will be combined painting and musical analysis to explore the deep meaning of"Blue" in the non-traditional musical structure in the title of Rhapsody in Blue.This thesis consists of Introduction,Text and Conclusion.In the Introduction,the author elaborates the research purpose,literature review,research methods and innovative views,aiming to improve the ability of comprehensive discourse by organizing a large amount of literature.In the meantime,providing another possibility in the related topic through the research results.In the first chapter,the author elaborates the background of Rhapsody in Blue,and makes a comparison between different versions of the scores with recordings,aiming to provide a better quality selection of information for colleagues and readers.In the second chapter,the author explains how history influence on Jazz,then analyzes how Classical music and Jazz work together in Rhapsody in Blue in the next chapter by studying Gershwin's life with these two styles.Finally,on the basis of the musical themes of Schiff s induction,the author analyzes the jazz elements and the interaction and connection between the thematic materials,and deeply explores the meaning of "blue" as the musical language "blues" in the title of Rhapsody in Blue.In the third chapter,the author explores Zilczer's interpretation of "Synaesthesia"by describing American painter Dove's paintings through the analysis of Synaesthesia and Popular Culture:Arthur Dove,George Gershwin,and the 'Rhapsody in Blue ',and explores the meaning of "blue" as a painting language in the title of Rhapsody in Blue.In the fourth chapter,the author analyzes the musical elements through the narrative,association and analogy of Synaesthesia,and interprets the four-part musical structure with the jazz elements in the music.Among them,the author will explain the painting and musical meanings together,in order to provide another way of interpretation and listening for the performers and the audience.In the conclusion,the author summarizes the research method and innovation views,arranges the argumentation ideas,and looks forward to the research results and trends of related fields in the future.
