Study Of Vague Language In Legal Documents On Economy And Trade C-E Translation From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

As communication with international enterprises becomes closer,legal documents on economy and trade(LDET)translation,as a carrier to show the Chinese legal culture and system to the world,plays an important role in the communication process between different enterprises of different cultures in the world.The present research,based on the Skopos theory,selects 10 codes of LDET on the official website of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China,setting the monolingual corpus software Wordsmith and bilingual parallel corpus software Paraconc as the research tools to calculate the frequency of vague language in LDET,and analyzes the influencing factors and translation methods in the translation of the LDET.The author finds that there are three types of vague language in LDET,which are vague additives,vagueness by choice of vague words,and vagueness by implicature.Vague additives hold the primary status;vagueness by choice of vague words is the second;vagueness by implicature is the third.Vague language ensures the accuracy and strictness of LDET and avoids legal language ambiguity under special situations by using the resilience of events and persons.It is shown that there are five main methods in vague language C-E translation,namely vague meaning equivalence translation,free translation with idiomatic patterns,vague meaning strengthened translation,vague meaning weakened translation and omission.Among them,vague meaning strengthened translation,vague meaning weakened translation and omission of vagueness by choice of vague words are used to reflect the assurance of legal documents function.Free translation with idiomatic patterns,vague meaning weakened translation and omission are used to reflect these three kinds of vague language to suit the language habits and culture of target text(TT),and to maintain the acceptance of TT audience in the C-E translation.Vague meaning weakened translation of vague additives and vague meaning equivalence translation of these three vague languages are adopted to achieve intertextual coherence and equivalence between the information output of source text(ST)and information input of TT.
