| This report is based on an informative text of a science book entitled Powering the Dream: The History and Promise of Green Technology.This book tells the story of crazy inventors who succeeded in creating a real substitute-green technology due to the scarcity of energy supply in the United States.This is a book with twenty-seven short chapters,each covering a diverse story.The excerpts are the middle section“Lessons from the Great Energy Rethink”,which has five short “thought” chapters.The information is delivered in a coherent and powerful way due to the use of various cohesive devices.With the robust development of modern industry,it requires relatively high translation quality of science passages in informative texts.Thus,it’s worthy exploring the translation of the chosen text.Combined with the textual features,cohesive devices are taken as research subjects,which can be divided into reference,conjunction,lexical cohesion,substitution and ellipsis.Under guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the present report conducts both qualitative and quantitative analysis of the translation strategies used in dealing with 1025 cohesive devices in the source text.It is found that seven translation strategies are applied to above four types of cohesive devices,which include omission,addition,combination,conversion,negation,diversion and inversion.Through the analysis and research,it aims to further explore and make a conclusion about the type of the cohesive devices in the source text and its translationstrategies on the one hand.On the other hand,it aims to offer a reference in dealing with the informative English text. |
