| This report is based on the E-C translation practice of the biographical book,Just as I Am(Excerpts). As the competition among peers increases by leaps and bounds, people are inclined to read biographies about celebrities in order to get clues to success. The translation of such texts is worth studying against this background. This report takes cohesive devices as the research objects, focusing on the difficulties in achieving coherence in translation with the aim to summarize the translation techniques of cohesive devices. The source text is narrated naturally and coherently due to the use of lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion including reference, ellipsis, substitution, and conjunction. As the use of them are different between English and Chinese, and combined with the textual features, the translation of cohesive devices with the aim of realizing coherence in translation renders a difficulty in translation process. To achieve high-quality translation that is faithful, natural and smooth and meets the readers’ needs,Nida’s functional equivalence theory that focuses on the reproduction of the source information with the natural and close equivalence in the target language is taken as the theoretical basis of this report.Guided by this theory in case analysis, five translation techniques, addition, omission, repetition, specification and combination, are used in translation of cohesive devices.Through the research and analysis, the translator concludes the translation techniques of cohesive devices in biographical texts and expects that the findings and suggestions can provide a reference for similar researches or similar translations. |
