In order to explore the effective teaching and learning of vocabulary,in this study,the writer attempts to carry out a vocabulary learning strategy training to facilitate teachers to implement diverse vocabulary teaching methods in class and help junior students improve vocabulary learning results.From what has been mentioned above,this research attempts to address four questions as follows:(1)What is participants' frequency of vocabulary learning strategy use?(2)Are there any changes in participants' frequency of vocabulary learning strategy use after they receive the vocabulary learning strategy training? If there are some changes,what are the changes?(3)Among the three targeted vocabulary learning strategies,which one is the easiest and most difficult for participants to understand and apply?(4)Has the vocabulary learning strategy training improved the participants' vocabulary learning results?Aiming at answering the research questions,explanatory sequential mixed method was adopted in this study.33 students of Class Seven,Grade Seven in Tianjin XX High School were selected as the sample in this study.Multiple instruments,such as questionnaire,test paper,interview protocol,were used to gather data in this study.Prior to the strategy instruction,the students' beliefs and application of learning vocabulary strategy were investigated through Gu(2018)'s vocabularylearning questionnaire.Their vocabulary proficiency was also surveyed by a vocabulary proficiency test.Three less frequently used strategies,namely picture-creation strategy,word-formation strategy,and using words in created situations strategy,were chosen as the training items and then the students were provided with three-week vocabulary learning strategy training.After the instruction,the same questionnaire and test paper were distributed to the students again to find out the changes of their frequency of vocabulary learning strategy use and vocabulary proficiency.In addition,six students from different levels participated in an interview to discover their attitudes towards the training.In this study,the quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed by descriptive analysis,paired sample T-test through SPSS 16.0 and thematic analysis approach respectively.Through analyzing of all the collected data,some findings can be summarized.Firstly,the participants can apply vocabulary learning strategies to consolidate the memorization but they still get used to employing rote methods.Secondly,the students tend to use more strategies when learning vocabulary after the training.Besides,most students state picture-creation is easiest while word formation is the most complicated strategy to comprehend and apply.Finally,participants have made progress in vocabulary learning after receiving the training.All the results indicate that the vocabulary learning strategy training exerts a positive effect on students' vocabulary learning.Thereby,it's necessary forteachers to instruct students on how to memorize vocabulary.Students are expected to acquire more vocabulary learning strategies to optimize their outcome of vocabulary learning.
