Under the deep development of information technology,Multimodal Discourse Analysis Theory emerged in western countries in 1990 s.Multimodal Discourse Analysis Theory refers to the use of multiple senses(auditory,sensory,visual,tactile,etc.)and the combination of various modal factors(picture,video,text,color,audio,etc.)for discourse communication.In recent years,many researchers have put Multimodal Discourse Analysis Theory into practical teaching.In the field of reading teaching,most researches focus on combination of multimodal teaching mode with textbook.However,the author thinks that the content and novelty of the textbook are limited.The textbook is a “model” for English learning,if students only read the articles in the textbook,which will far from meet the requirements of the new curriculum standard.Therefore,the input language for students must be interesting,correct and comprehensibility,and should be higher than the existing knowledge level of students,which is the principle of “i+1” emphasized in the Input Hypothesis proposed by Krashen.In this theory,“i” refers to the current knowledge level of learners,and “1” is slightly higher than the existing knowledge level of learners.English newspapers are rich in language resources,so this study intends to select 21 st Century Teens as reading material,which is suitable for senior one students to read,and the author also applies multimodal teaching mode to the practical English newspaper reading teaching.There are two research questions as follows:(1)What is the change of students’ interest in newspaper reading after teacher apply multimodal teaching mode to English newspaper reading class?(2)What is the impact of the application of multimodal teaching mode on students’ reading grades? Two classes from The XXX Middle School are selected as research subjects.The multimodal teaching mode is applied to the experimental class,and the traditional teaching mode is applied to the control class.The author collects data by the way of classroom observation,questionnaires,tests,and interview and then analyzes the data with SPSS to compare the differences between the two classes.The final results are as follows: firstly,the multimodal teaching mode can improve students’ reading interest after teacher apply it in English newspaper reading class.Secondly,the application of multimodal teaching mode is beneficial to improve students’ reading grades.Finally,the author puts forward some suggestions on multimodal newspaper reading teaching in senior high school.
