Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin is a solo piano piece composed by Qigang Chen in 2000 at the invitation of the Messiaen International Piano Competition Committee as a commissioned piece for the competition.In 2014,Chen composed Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin-Ouverture Symphonique for the Shanghai Symphony Hall Inauguration Concert based on Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin.In the two compositions,Chen fully demonstrated his sophisticated compositional techniques,artistic pursuits and musical ideas.This thesis includes four chapters.Chapter One contains the reasons for topic selection,the current status of research and the significance of this research.Chapter Two explains the compositional background of Chen's solo piano piece Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin and Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin-Ouverture Symphonique.Chapter Three analyzes the main compositional characteristics of Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin and the symphonic features of this piece.Chapter Four highlights how studying Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin-Ouverture Symphonique can enlighten pianists and serve as a reference for performance techniques when they learn and perform the solo piano piece Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin.The analysis of Instants d'un Opéra de Pékin from an orchestral approach can shed new light on touch,timbre and pedaling for performers when practicing and performing this piece.
