With the continuous promotion and deepening of quality education, teaching students in accordance with their aptitude has been concerned by more educational researchers, and the focus of teaching research has been gradually shifted from the object of teaching to the individual differences of learners.Perceptual learning style refers to perceptual channel that learners prefer in the process of learning. As one of the important factors of individual differences, perceptual learning style provides a certain basis for teachers to teach students in accordance with their aptitude. This study carries out the English reading teaching on the basis of fully understanding the perceptual learning styles of junior middle school students. The study explores the English reading teaching mode based on perceptual learning style, and then verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this mode in middle school English teaching of reading.Based on perceptual learning style theory, this study discusses the following questions:(1)What are the tendencies and characteristics of junior middle school students’ perceptual learning styles?(2)How does English reading teaching based on perceptual learning styles affect English reading performance of the junior middle school students?(3)What effect does English reading teaching based on perceptual learning styles have on students’ interest in English reading? This study takes 157 students in Class 16(EC)and Class 17(CC)of Grade 8 in Xinyang Yangshan Middle School as the research subjects. The questionnaire method, experimental method and interviewing method are adopted to collect the related data.First of all,the perceptual learning style preference questionnaire is distributed to the students in the experimental class,in order to understand the students’ learning style tendencies and characteristics,as well as the correlation between students’ learning style and gender.According to the students’ learning style, the author carries out a 14-week teaching experiment. The author adopts corresponding teaching strategies according to students’ learning styles, designs teaching activities and homework that match students’ perceptual learning styles to explore the impact of English reading teaching based on perceptual learning styles on students’ reading performance. At the end of the experiment, the author distributes the questionnaire on English reading interest to the students in EC and conducts interviews to understand the changes of students’ interest in reading. The research result shows:(1)The students in the experimental class prefer a variety of perceptual learning styles, among which group type, kinesthetic type and tactile type are the students’ preferred perceptual learning styles. There is significant gender difference in tactile learning style preference.Male students prefer tactile learning style better than females.(2)The post-test scores of the students in the experimental class have been greatly improved compared with the pre-test scores(p=0.000).The teaching of English reading based on perceptual learning style has a measurable influence on reading performance.(3)The results of questionnaire and interview show that students’ interest in English reading has been improved. This study confirms the feasibility and effectiveness of English reading teaching based on perceptual learning style. Therefore,it is necessary to guide teachers to have an in-depth understanding of students’ learning styles, and choose appropriate teaching methods, teaching strategies and classroom activities to improve students’ learning interest and efficiency.
