| The Library of Chinese Classics: Condensed Compendium of Materia Medica(Chinese-English Version),published by the Foreign Languages Press in 2004,is considered to be the most complete English version of Compendium of Materia Medica so far.The translator Luo Xiwen is therefore honored as “the Pioneer of Chinese Materia Medica English Translation”(Bo Jieping,2011).Being frequently applied to translation studies, the theory of Pragmatic Equivalence has quite strong explanatory power in the study of English Translation of Chinese Classics from the multidisciplinary perspective.By taking Luo Xiwen’s Condensed Compendium of Materia Medica as the object, this paper will make a comprehensive and multidimensional study of English translation of Jing,Qi and Shen in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM).Through intensive reading and comparison between different texts, this paper will also discuss which methods and strategies used by Luo Xiwen have achieved pragmatic equivalence as well as explanatory power and guiding principles that pragmatic equivalence has in TCM translation, expecting to provide some reference materials for the application of pragmatic equivalence theory to TCM translation. It is found that: the theory of pragmatic equivalence has rational effect of explanation and instruction on the translation of TCM terminologies and culture-loaded words such as Jing,Qi and Shen. The widely used principles in TCM translation such as principle of naturalness, principle of nationality, principle of briefness all share some common ground with pragmatic equivalence. The methods used during Luo’s translation such as phonic translation, liberal translation, omission, addition and attaching explanation, all of which,in different degree, realize pragmatic equivalence. |
