A Report On Simulated C-E Consecutive Interpreting Of Teaching Lectures On Chinese Materia Medica

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)is widely employed to treat illness in our country,especially when the novel coronavirus hit the world seriously,it has been applied to clinic and cured lots of patients.Because of its important and amazing clinical curative effect,TCM has been studied and adopted in more and more countries and regions in today’s world.Chinese Materia Medica,edited by Zhang Tingmo,is an 11th five-year national planned university textbook for higher education,which introduces the basic theories and clinical applications of traditional Chinese medicine systematically and comprehensively.The interpreter chose two videos of Zhang Tingmo’s teaching lectures,which are about the three terms of TCM,Chinese materia medica,herbs in the introduction and the development of Chinese Materia Medica in the first chapter of the textbook,to conduct simulated interpreting practice.The background information and the significance of the interpreting task are introduced in the first part of the report.Then the task,the stylistic characteristics of TCM interpretation and discourse of Zhang Tingmo are analyzed.Next,the preparation for background information,interpretation theory,plans and quality control are elaborated,and self-evaluation,peer-evaluation and supervisor-evaluation are presented.Finally,by analyzing examples from the aspects of maximizing the contextual effects,minimizing the processing efforts and ostension,the interpreting methods and strategies are applied,such as amplification,omission,explanation and so on,which are guided by the relevance theory to explore how to adopt them to solve the interpreting difficulty of fragmented sentences,logic fuzziness and redundancy in the original information.Through the interpreting practice,the interpreter deeply realized that solid basic bilingual skills,in-depth study of encyclopedic knowledge and interpreting ability on TCM should be mastered to become a qualified interpreter.It is hoped that this report will provide reference and guidance for herself and others in their future interpreting practices,and provide reference for the dissemination and exchange of TCM culture.
