A Report On C-E Translation Based On Functional Translation Theory

With the acceleration of economic globalization and the rapid development of society,China has conducted cooperation and exchanges with other countries in many fields.The world needs to know more about China,and China urgently needs to present itself to the world through different channels.Some published political documents have played a significant role in foreign communications and exchanges,which is one of the most important ways for the world to know about China.Therefore,the translation of Chinese political documents has received more and more attention.Functionalist translation theory started in the 1970s.It emphasizes that translators should regard translation behavior as a purposeful intercultural communicative activity from the perspective of communicative function and purpose of the text.Skopos theory,the core of functionalist translation theory,was proposed by Hans Vermeer in his Framework for a General Translation Theory in 1978.Skopos theory includes skopos rule,coherence rule(intra-textual coherence rule)and fidelity rule(inter-textual coherence rule),and among them,skopos rule is the first principle,coherence rule and fidelity rule are subordinate to the skopos rule.This report selects the Outline of National Medium-and Long-term Scientific and Technological Development Plan as the source text of translation practice,under the guidance of functionalist translation theory,analyzing the text type,language features and the representative translation examples during the translation process.This report consists five chapters,including description of translation task,translation process,an overview of functional translation theory,analysis of translation examples and summary.The fourth chapter is the core part of this report,in which translation examples were analyzed from levels of vocabulary,syntax and rhetoric based on functional translation theory,and appropriate translation strategies and methods to instruct the translation practice were adopted.The translation practice research shows that functional translation theory can guide the translation of political documents effectively,and improve the quality of translation.Besides,this translation practice report also provides some useful references for the translation of similar texts.
