| With the rapid development and the increasing exchanges and cooperation of the medical industry,China has developed into the world’s second largest medical device market, and has imported a large number of medical devices, whose instructions need to be translated into Chinese.T’he medical device instruction is an important carrier reflecting the technical characteristics of medical devices, the translation quality of which is directly related to the safety and effectiveness of medical devices use. Therefore, the translation of medical device instructions becomes increasingly important.Based on her translation practice in the translation company, the author of this report conducts a study on the problems at lexical, syntactic and textual levels in translating the medical device instructions, using Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory, and proposes some feasible solutions to them. This report consists of five parts. The first chapter is an overview of the requirements and significance of the translation task. The second chapter is the description of the translation process, including preparations before translation, translation process and quality control after translation. In the third chapter,Nida’s functional equivalence theory is introduced and its applicability to the translation of medical device instructions together with translation principles is explored. In Chapter Four, the author explores the language features of medical device instructions from the aspects of vocabulary, syntax and text, and analyzes the strategies used in translation through exemplification. The last chapter is the conclusion,in which the author summarizes the major findings of the study and the experience gained in the translation of medical device instructions, presents the limitations of the study and makes some suggestions for further research and translation practiceThe research results show that Nida’s functional equivalence theory is applicable to the translation of medical texts and plays a guiding role in translating medical device instructions The translator’s application of Nida’s functional equivalence theory as well as of choice of corresponding translation methods in the translation process helps to achieve the functional equivalence between the source text and the target text, thus improving the quality of the translation. |
