Research On The Relationship Between Emotional Metaphor And Temperature Perception

The formation and representation of abstract concepts has always been one of the hot issues in the field of cognitive psychology.Abstract concepts such as emotion and time are invisible and intangible to people.How do people obtain and represent these concepts?The conceptual metaphor theory based on embodied cognition holds that the human body and the environment and the mind are interacting.The formation of the concept is rooted in the general body experience.The abstract concept is constructed on the basis of the embodied concept.In Chinese,the concept of emotions expressing hope or hopeless is always associated with the concept of temperature.This study explores the relationship between despair,hopeful emotion,and temperature perception based on theories of embodied cognition and conceptual metaphor.In this study,two experiments were designed to explore the metaphorical representation of emotional concepts and temperature and their effects on temperature perception and preference.Experiment 1 used implicit association test to measure the degree of connection between target conceptual words(desperation,hope)and hot and cold words.The results showed that the combination of despair-coldness and hope-warm has a strong implicit association effect.In experiment two,autobiographical recall induced method was used to induce the feelings of despair or hope of the subjects and measure the individual's perception and preference of room temperature.The results showed that there was no difference in the room temperature between the two groups of subjects,and the difference in the eagerness at room temperature was significant,The despair group craved for higher room temperature.The experimental results show that the metaphor of emotion and temperature is not.only reflected in the semantic level,but also in the psychological representation.The activation of the emotional concept activates the relevant temperature perception.
