Abstract/Summary:
This Thesis is meant to be a systematic numerical study on the effect of the filtration element shape on the filtration properties of a fibrous filter. In optimizing the design of a fibrous filter it is important to know how the shape of the filtration elements is going to affect important proprieties such as filtration efficiency, pressure drop, dust cake formation, and loading in the filter's depth.; One way to investigate this is by numerical modeling. The numerical models developed were first used on the isolated circular fiber. The results of both models were found to be in good agreement with analytical and experimental results obtained in similar filtration conditions. Aside for the circular fiber, three other type fibers with different cross-sectional shapes have been considered: elliptical, squared and rectangular. Each of the considered fiber type was studied in the staggered array configuration as well. An important electrostatic filtration mechanism, connected to the shape of the filtration elements, is the dielectrophoresis.{09}We studied the influence of the dielectrophoresis on the filtration proprieties of each considered fiber type, both in the isolated fiber and staggered array of fibers models.
