The Research On Paul T.durbin's Philosophy Of Technology

Paul T.Durbin(1933-2019)is one of the representatives of American pragmatism philosophy of technology.He advocated the philosophy of technology for social action,emphasized the moral solution of technology ethics,and called on the scientific and technological personnel and the philosophical and social personnel to jointly undertake more social responsibilities and solve many problems of technology society.He also actively participated in all kinds of beneficial social actions,gave full play to his interdisciplinary advantages,made a lot of social services,and made outstanding contributions to the development of technological philosophy and the progress of technological society.First of all,this paper studies the formation of Durbin's philosophy of technology from two aspects: the basis of reality and the source of theory.In the era of a large number of crises and problems in the technology society,Durbin faced the reality and formed his philosophy of technology under the influence of Dewey and Mead's pragmatism.This paper is followed by a study of Durbin's concept of technology and the characteristics of his philosophy of technology,On the basis of introducing Durbin's academic experience and contribution,it analyzes his understanding of technology and technology society,interprets Durbin's views on technology's instrumentalism,epistemology and sociology,and his cautious optimism of technology.Durbin's pragmatism philosophy of technology has three characteristics:action,universality and practicality;interdisciplinary is also Durbin's research characteristic,which promotes the research of engineering philosophy and puts forward a new research of "R &D philosophy".Then,this paper focuses on Durbin's technical ethics and social action.The main thought and content of Durbin's technology ethics can be divided into four parts: technology must be controlled,morality is the main control means,there must be corresponding social responsibility and necessary social action.Durbin's advocated the social action of philosophy of technology,which mainly reflected in the reform of technology education,the transformation of technology media and the improvement of biotechnology,He also proposed some concrete measures for philosophers to participate in social action.Finally,the Enlightenment of Durbin's philosophy of technology is discussed from the aspects of enhancing the diversified understanding of technology,promoting the social action of philosophy of technology,reforming STS education,etc.combined with the current situation and existing problems in China,the corresponding measures and suggestions are put forward.
